Cell turnover occurs more quickly in some areas of the body than others. For example, cell turnover accelerates in areas of high friction, like the palms of the hands, the soles of the feet, and the regions exposed to the sun. Cell turnover also naturally slows with age, which is why older adults tend to have drier, thinner skin that is more susceptible to damage.

Several factors can affect cell turnover, including genetics, lifestyle, diet, and medications. For example, exposure to UV radiation from the sun or artificial sources such as tanning beds accelerates cell turnover. This exposure can lead to premature skin aging and increase the risk of skin cancer. Smoking also accelerates cellular turnover and leads to premature aging of the skin. Certain medications, such as retinoids (vitamin A derivatives), can also affect cell turnover.

What is skin cell turnover?

The cell turnover process divides into three phases: the basal cell layer, the squamous cell layer, and the granular cell layer.

The basal cell layer is the epidermis's bottom layer, comprised of actively dividing cells. These cells move up to the skin's surface as they mature and become replaced by new cells from the basal cell layer. The squamous cell layer comprises flattened cells that have stopped dividing. These cells form a protective barrier against infection and damage. The granular cell layer comprises cells that secrete lipids (oils) that help keep the skin hydrated and protected.

The skin cell turnover rate generally occurs every 28-30 days in young adults but slows with age. It can be affected by several factors, including genetics, lifestyle, diet, and certain medications.
