Nourishing Skincare for Winter Months

November 25, 2022

Cold weather can crack your skin if you aren’t hydrating it enough. So, pull a blanket, get comfortable, and let’s learn nourishing skincare for winter months!

As season changes, so should your skin care regimen. To stay on course with the challenges winter can bring to the skin. Thus, keeping it happy all year round.

But before you buy new products, consider taking action in other areas to ensure your skin is happy and healthy.

What is up with cold weather?

The skin barrier hinders its natural process in dry, cold climates. As a result, the unprotected skin will fuse its production of pro-inflammatory proteins and cortisol. Thus, stressing the skin, becoming sensitive, and reacting towards allergens or irritants. Other skin conditions may follow.

Winter also affects the skin’s lipid production - natural fats that help your skin retain moisture.

Don’t freeze up. Enforce action to empower your skin. Follow these nourishing skincare steps.

  1. Drink water

You would be surprised to know that during wintertime, dehydration is also an issue. During summertime, sweating leads to loss of water. What happens during winter? Well, we tend to drink less water. So heat some water to make tea and hydrate yourself!

But why?

Our H2O (water) keeps the skin on point. Among other things, without hydration, cells cannot form and function properly. So carry a reusable water bottle and set reminders to hydrate your body.

  1. Hydrate & Moisturize

Showering during cold weather can be painful, but don’t skip moisturizing your body. Neglecting hydration and moisturizers will impact the skin’s vitality. Don’t starve your skin.

And keep in mind there is a difference between the two.

  • Hydration has a watery consistency and helps with providing water to your skin.
  • Moisturizer locks the water in, creating a barrier. Its density is of oil-based ingredients.

There are three categories of moisturizers to consider: occlusive, emollients, and humectant.

Occlusive moisturizers form a barrier on the skin's surface to avert moisture from escaping. Humectant moisturizers, on the other hand, work by attracting water to the skin and holding it in place. Emollients address dryness, strengthening a weak skin barrier while softening the skin.

  1. Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Consuming nutritious food will also defend your skin from harsh climate changes. Omega-3 fatty acids help reduce inflammation and also hydrate the skin. Prep your meals with salmon, walnuts, and flaxseed oil to benefit the most from omega-3 fatty acids.

  1. Avoid harsh soaps

Coming in contact with aggressive cleaning components can strip the skin of its natural oils. Assure that you aren’t using harsh soaps or detergents that can irritate the skin.

  1. Exfoliate

For winter care, don’t harass your skin with grainy exfoliating scrubs. It will lead to further irritation and welcome dryness. Look on the label to find one of these two ingredients: alpha-hydroxy acids and glycolic acid. They both work well for dry skin.

  1. Sunscreen

Funny to see this here, huh? Well, it shouldn’t. By now, you should know that all year round, sunblock is needed to protect your skin. In snowy areas, the snow can reflect up to 80 percent of the sun’s UV light [1]. Don’t let your skin age faster, and wear sunscreen!

Although it is tempting to always shower in hot water to avoid suffering a cold breeze, your body might be well off without a high temperature.

The heat dries your skin, causing it to crack and peel. So don’t overdo it by warming up your house. Take precautions, layer up, drink water, and use lotions or creams to nourish your skin.
